Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media also a speaker who is Canadian. Feminist Frequency was founded by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos featuring commentary and analysis of the representations of women that are prevalent in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit educational site that explores the representation of women in pop stories of culture - was created and is directed by Sarkeesian. Alongside working to highlight the problems surrounding the harassment and targeted assaults on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is committed to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes prevalent in pop culture. With a master's in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public presenter and has presented speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Inquiring about gender and feminism since the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while she was still at University. This ambitious woman planned to create an online series on the gender roles in games and was then the victim of an online harassment campaign. The attack did be a deterrent, but it made her more determined to be a feminist media critic. Many awards have been presented to her as a way of acknowledging all the contributions that she have made. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit investigates women's representation in pop culture today.
